Why interim or fractional services

MOST PEOPLE CALL US AT ONE OF THREE MOMENTS

The seat is empty

Your marketing lead has gone, or is going, and the function is running on momentum. Campaigns still ship and the agency still invoices. What has stopped is anyone deciding what matters.

The seat is filled and it is not working

The person is capable, or was, and something in the fit has gone wrong. You have been putting off that conversation for two quarters and the year is not waiting.

The seat is filled and the company has grown past it

Nothing is broken. The next stage needs someone who has run marketing at that size before, and the person in the job has not yet.

The solution is different in each case, and so is the shape of the engagement. What does not change is that somebody has to decide what the function should look like now, hire against that, and stop the things that stopped working two quarters ago without anyone saying so.

Where the business is licensed, the job changes again. Every claim goes through approval cycles, each market has its own rules about what a financial promotion may say, and a marketing leader who has not worked in this environment spends valuable quarters finding the edges. We know that ground.

SOMETIMES MENTORING IS THE ANSWER

The third case where the person in the seat is capable and the gap is experience rather than capacity, mentoring them costs less and you keep them in the organisation.

Outrun marketing practice

THE TEAM

Outrun's marketing practice is Michael Pötscher and Philipp Wurzian. There is no bench, no associate pool, and no matching process. The partner on the first call is the partner who does the work.

The mandates where the function has to be built or rebuilt. No team, no budget logic, or a team that has outgrown the way it was organised.

CMO at Bitpanda, on the management board of a regulated crypto platform. Grew the marketing team past 70 people and built the compliance review process across six EU markets.

CMO at TourRadar as its first marketing hire. Built the function from nothing to 40 people while the company went from 5 people to more than 280.

SVP Marketing for Digital Wallets at Paysafe. 70 people across Europe and North America, restructured while headcount came down by a quarter.

Crypto and digital assets, fintech, payments, consumer technology. MiCAR and FMA. German, English, plus French and Italian.

The mandates where the problem is commercial. B2B demand generation that does not exist yet, or a market that is underperforming.

Director B2B Marketing at Paysafe. A team of 15 across five countries, with global responsibility for a portfolio generating around USD 1.5 billion a year.

Head of Marketing for paysafecard. A brand serving more than 12 million customers across 55 markets, and the rebrand that went with it.

Four interim and fractional mandates since 2024, including interim CMO at Wirex and interim Head of Marketing at eyerim, the second of which ran through to an appointed permanent successor.

Payments and fintech, crypto and digital assets, e-commerce, gaming and entertainment, retail and distribution. German, English.

I carried the line role for six years before I advised on it. Building functions from nothing, integrating teams through reorganisations, owning brand all the way into physical retail. Every one of them with my name against the result.

We hold three to four mandates at a time across the whole practice, advisory and leadership work together. That is deliberate, and it is the reason the partner you meet is the partner doing the work.

Behind the two of us is the rest of Outrun. When a mandate hits a licensing question, a banking relationship, or an introduction that has to happen this month, the answer is in the building rather than in a referral to someone else's network.

Engagements

THREE WAYS TO START

Marketing assessment

One week. EUR 2,900. Credited against your first month if you appoint us.

Before any of this, we have a briefing call, at no charge. You tell us what you think you need. If it is obvious from that conversation, we go straight to a proposal.

The assessment is how we find out what the organisation really needs. One week looking at the marketing function as it runs today: the team and what they are capable of, the goals, the spend, the agencies, and where regulation is shaping what you can say. It ends with a written recommendation and an hour with us to talk it through.

The recommendation is not always a mandate with us. It might be that you need a fractional arrangement rather than an interim one, or that the person to lead marketing is already on your team and needs mentoring rather than replacing, or that you should hire permanently. We will say which.

If you appoint us for a mandate within 30 days, the EUR 2,900 comes off your first invoice.

Fractional CMO

From EUR 6,400 a month. Three-month minimum, then rolling.

For a marketing team and budget that should be delivering more than they currently do. We sharpen the positioning and the go-to-market, decide what gets dropped, run the weekly leadership cadence, hold the agencies to account, and give the board a report it can act on.

CommitmentDay rateMonthly
4 days a monthEUR 1,600EUR 6,400
8 days a monthEUR 1,500EUR 12,000

Eight days is the usual starting point. Four works when the team is small and the questions are strategic rather than operational.

Interim CMO

From EUR 1,400 a day. Three to twelve months, fixed term.

Full ownership of the marketing function while the seat is empty. Budget, team, hiring, and the recruitment of the permanent successor.

CommitmentDay rateMonthly
3 days a weekEUR 1,400≈ EUR 18,000
4 days a weekEUR 1,400≈ EUR 24,000

Every interim mandate ends with a written handover to the person who takes over. That is part of the scope rather than a favour at the end.

The working arrangement

WE LEAD. WE CAN BRING THE HANDS.

What we do not do

Run campaigns, produce content, or buy media. Those are hands-on jobs and we are not the pair of hands.

What we do

Own the strategy, hire and brief the people who execute, and hold them to a standard.

If you have no team

We assemble and manage the specialists who execute. Contracted through Outrun, so you deal with one contract and one invoice rather than five, or contracted directly by you. Either way the accountability sits with us.

How this usually fails

A company expects a plan and a pair of hands, hires one part-time leader, and gets the plan. If you have no team, no budget for one, and no appetite to build either, a fractional CMO alone will hand you a strategy that nothing happens to. We will say that on the first call rather than three months in.

Case studies

RECENT WORK

A selection. We do not write up every mandate, and some clients prefer we do not name them.

Recent interim and fractional mandates

Interim CMO, Wirex

Three months · full-time · team of 10

A UK fintech needed the marketing function built out and B2B marketing established alongside an extension of the product portfolio. We built the company's first marketing budget, strategy and execution roadmap, established B2B demand generation and sales enablement including the working process between marketing and sales, filled two vacant roles, and broke down the silos that were stopping the team operating.

Interim Head of Marketing, eyerim

Part-time, roughly ten hours a week · team of 8

An e-commerce business in Slovakia had a vacant marketing leadership role and needed someone to run a strategy process and hold the seat until a permanent appointment. We facilitated the strategy process with the leadership team through to an agreed multi-year direction, built the following year's budget, cut unprofitable acquisition channels and markets in favour of blended return, rebuilt a loss-making product line around upsell instead of direct acquisition, and assessed the candidates for the permanent role. That person was appointed.

When you should hire instead

If marketing is your primary growth engine, you can fund a competitive package, and you can wait the three to six months a search takes, hire a permanent CMO. A fractional arrangement above roughly ten days a month costs more than an employed CMO and gives you less. We will tell you when you have crossed that line.

Questions

COMMON QUESTIONS

Next step

EVERY ENQUIRY IS ANSWERED BY ONE OF US

Thirty minutes, at no charge, with one of the two people who would do the work. There is no intake form that routes to a junior, because there is no junior.

Sometimes the answer is that you need a permanent hire rather than us. We would rather say that on the call than three months into a mandate.
